Parabens – Warning: They are in many things we use and could be doing us harm

Introduction to Parabens

Women of today are obsessed with cosmetics and make-up products. Make-up is not a recent invention as women wore make-up in the ancient cultures too. Women use cosmetics to embellish their beauty, feel younger, attractive and more confident. Bare faced beauty is apparently not the fashion etiquette in the 21st century. However preservatives are used in cosmetic formulations to prevent spoilage and inadvertent contamination whether from microbial growth or undesirable chemical changes. Parabens are widely used in cosmetic products to prevent the growth of microbes.

Parabens are a chemical compound of para-hydroxybenzoic acid which is naturally present in many fruits and vegetables. Nearly all the parabens used are man-made and not naturally occurring. This chemical based preservative is artificially synthesized and added to skin creams, lotions, moisturizers, shaving gels, foundations, mascaras, shampoos, toothpastes and all cosmetic products to prolong their shelf life. To control microbial growth and to stabilize any cosmetic product some sort of preservative has to be added. Parabens are used because they are effective preservatives and antimicrobials and most of all available very cheap.

1. They trigger common skin problems like dermatitis, rosacea and allergic reactions.

3. Parabens have the ability to mimic estrogen. They increase the hormonal level of estrogen which results in breast cancer. Yes, besides causing significant damage to the sensitive skin they pose the threat of breast cancer and can even alter the entire hormonal system of the body. A recent study revealed the presence of paraben in the breast tumor of a woman suffering from breast cancer.

4. This cosmetic ingredient which is lately an object of vilification can even induce a host of developmental disorders and fertility issues. Yes, they are reported to adversely affect the secretion of the testosterone and the function of the male reproductive system.
